Local crime statistics online A new service that allows members of the public to view crime statistics for their area has been launched by Leicestershire Constabulary. Following on from the launch of individual websites for each of the 21 local policing unit in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, the service gives Internet users the opportunity to view the numbers of crimes in a wide range of categories. By logging onto Leicestershire Constabulary’s website at people can enter their postcode to be taken directly to their local policing unit website. From there people can access a wide range of information including news, appeals for help and details of local events. The crime statistics can be accessed on the local policing websites by going to http://www.leics.police.uk and clicking on ‘local policing’. They can also select the beat covering where they live to find out how many crimes have been reported and detected in their area. The statistics are divided into 12 categories ranging from burglary to criminal damage. Each category shows the number of crimes reported and solved for the current month and year to date compared to the same period last year. Using a mix of easy to read graphs and tables, the service gives people the opportunity to check the levels of crime in their area and compare them with the same time last year. Mr Jonathan Walters, Leicestershire Constabulary’s website officer said: “Making crime statistics available on the Force website for every beat in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland has been a real challenge and I hope it will prove to be valuable addition to our local policing websites. “Leicestershire Constabulary is one of the few forces in the UK to put beat-level crime statistics on their website and I hope that people in find this new service both interesting and useful.” Chief Superintendent Bill Holland head of the corporate development department said: “The publication of monthly crime figures down to beat-level on the Internet is an important step forward for Leicestershire Constabulary, and helps inform people about the true levels of crime in their neighbourhood. “This is a valuable addition to the local policing websites and is part of a broader approach that will see us further engaging with the public.” Leicestershire Constabulary’s website was launched in 2000 and attracts approximately 14,000 visitors a month. The site provides information on a wide-range of policing issues including crime prevention, road safety, missing persons along with details of careers with Leicestershire Constabulary. |
