Important road safety advice during winter months Leicestershire Constabulary is advising motorists to take extra care on the roads during the winter months. The British weather can be unpredictable. You need to take special care when it affects visibility or road conditions. Adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, frost, fog, snow and sleet can all affect driving conditions and may call for drivers to adjust their speed and use their lights. Road conditions can become treacherous and motorists are being advised to keep their distance from the vehicle in front, brake slowly not sharply, beware of spray and ensure their front and rear windscreens are clear. Traffic delays also requires careful consideration during the darker winter months so remember that although traffic may not appear to be moving, the situation could change quickly and pedestrians or unattended vehicles could add to the difficulties. Mobile ‘phones can also be another cause of distractions and motorists are reminded that it is an offence to use a hand-held mobile ‘phone, or similar device, when driving so please switch off before you drive off. Road safety officer, PC John Budulis of Leicestershire Constabulary’s traffic department, said: “My advice to all pedestrians, is to use a pedestrian crossing at all times. Help others to see you by wearing fluorescent or reflective clothing in poor light conditions and remain vigilant at all times” “Observe and anticipate other road users, pedestrians and motorcyclists. Use your mirrors regularly and don't forget to glance into your blind area before altering your course. “With a little bit of extra care we hope that everyone can complete their journeys safely.” Leicestershire Constabulary would like to remind motorists to be constantly vigilant regarding road safety and to slow down as excessive or inappropriate speed continues to play a major factor in many road accidents.
